Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first appearance was on television as Jackie Harris, a character that was played by her mother on her role on the ABC show Roseanne. However, her parents did not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the negative effects that stress could be able to have on their daughter. Perry says she didn't want to perform in high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity while at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry made her debut as an actress in New York after graduation, performing in minor parts in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as a stage actress. Perry was a part of Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie alongside her in 2015. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. In 2017, Perry was a part-time character in ABC's thriller about politics Scandal that starred her father. She was also cast in the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The role was selected through an audition, even having a strong connection with it.
